David Foster Wallace was right: Irony is ruining our culture

At one time, irony served to challenge the establishment; now it is the establishment. The art of irony has turned into ironic art. Irony for irony’s sake. A smart aleck making bomb noises in front of a city in ruins. But irony without a purpose enables cynicism. It stops at disavowal and destruction, fearing strong conviction is a mark of simplicity and delusion. But we can remake the world.

Sunday is a day to actively decompress. Curl up with a good tablet and read your eyes out.

This article may be seen as a shot across the hipster's bow, but it goes deeper in addressing the fear of honest emotion and belief. We all put up intellectual walls as defences, but I read this as using irony as an excuse to not be moved by another's meaning.
